ULM clinics and labs honored for service to community
University of Louisiana at Monroe clinics and laboratories were recognized at today’s CenturyTel Accent on Excellence Breakfast at the Monroe Civic Center Conference Hall. The annual event honors outstanding educators and educational programs in the community.
ULM President James Cofer later praised the community-minded efforts of ULM faculty. “This is an honor for both ULM and the community, and another valuable opportunity to recognize the incredible partnership that exists between the two. I am very proud that our clinics and laboratories are being praised by the public they serve. This kind of encouragement further fortifies our staff and students’ resolve to give back and enrich their community.”
Several ULM programs were honored for their contributions:
Dental Hygiene Clinic
Sharon Chaney, Clinic Director
Beverly Jarrell, Department Head
- Provides teeth cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants, cancer screening, patient education, and nutritional counseling
- Patients served yearly are approximately 2,000 at ULM, 250 at OPHU, and 350 at Riser
- Eight dentists, 11 faculty dental hygienists, and 60 students
- Located at 124 Caldwell Hall, the Ouachita Parish Health Unit, and Riser Middle School
Speech and Hearing Clinic
Norma Johnson, Clinic Director
Judy Fellows, Department Head
- Provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and therapy for children and adults with developmental or acquired communication problems
- Clients provided 4,658 hours of diagnostic and therapy services in last year
- Helped 2,258 individuals in last year
- Located in 126 Brown Hall; also operates clinic through Scottish Rite Foundation and Monroe Scottish Rite Bodies
Counselor Education Clinic
Yolanda Dupre, Clinic Director
Charles Pryor, Department Head
- Provides confidential individual, group, and family counseling to all individuals with personal, career, school, relationship, substance abuse, and other concerns
- Serves approximately 130 clients from the community yearly, providing more than 550 hours of counseling
- Four faculty and four graduate students
- Located at 284 Strauss Hall
Marriage and Family Therapy Center
Jana Sutton, Center Director
Lamar Woodham, Program Head
- Helps individuals, couples, and families improve their relationships
- Offers parenting classes, couples enrichment, pre-marital education, classes on helping children at school
- Works with more than 420 clients yearly and provides nearly 2,250 hours of service
- Six faculty, four graduate students, and 20 student therapists
- Located at 3404 Bon Aire Dr.
Human Performance Laboratory
Kelly Friery, Laboratory Director
Wilson Campbell, Department Head
- Provides health-related fitness evaluations: body composition, VO2max testing, and aerobic capacity
- In 2006-2007 school year, provided fitness evaluations for more than 900 student through $1.7 million grant from US Department of Education
- Works with West Monroe Fire Department and Chase Mortgage Company
- Six faculty and 15 graduate students
- Located in 50C Fant-Ewing Coliseum
