New travel course offered this summer

Students enrolled in the new travel course through the Department of Gerontology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will journey to university classrooms in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and more.

Dale Welch, professor of gerontology and sociology, developed the course, scheduled for July 19-29. “The Travel Course will give students an opportunity to meet gerontology and geriatric faculty at other universities and to learn about a wide range of topic," said Welch.

The class will include lectures by faculty with gerontology and geriatric expertise at the University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Northeast State University, Missouri State University, Lincoln University, Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri at Columbia, St. Louis University Medical School, and Memphis State University.

Students will tour two retirement communities in Louisiana and Oklahoma, the Carswell Federal Medical Center (Prison) in Ft. Worth, Texas, Sinclair’s School of Nursing Tiger Place in Columbia, Mo., and the St. Louis University Gait and Balance Lab and ACE Unit in Missouri.

The trip will also include entertainment opportunities, such as Texas Rangers Baseball, Bricktown in Oklahoma City, Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee, Okla., the Dixie Stampede and the Outlet Mall in Branson, Mo., a dinner and cruise on the Mississippi in St. Louis, Mo., and Beall Street in Memphis, Tenn.

Students may earn three hours of graduate credit (GERO 580), three hours of undergraduate credit (GERO 457D or SOCL 447D) or they may participate for professional development and receive a certificate of participation.

Individuals wanting to earn academic credit will enroll at ULM and register for the appropriate academic credit and pay the applicable tuition and fees through the regular registration process.

The price of the travel course includes travel on the University of Louisiana bus, l0 nights of lodging (double occupancy), all lectures and tours, continental breakfast at most hotels, 19 other meals, and admission to the entertainment events, excluding Bricktown and Beall Street.
