Music performances to feature Gwyneth Walker compositions March 5 – 8
Music lovers will have multiple opportunities March 5 – 8 to enjoy the works of Gwyneth Walker, composer-in-residence at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Deborah Chandler will direct the ULM Chamber Singers Monday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall. The chosen Walker selections include: “I Thank You God,” “This Train,” “White Horses,” “Love by the Water,” “I Will Be Earth,” and “A Kingdom of Bliss.”
ULM musical talent will perform Walker’s compositions in a chamber recital Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.
Chris Thompson, violin; Mark McCleery, cello; and Richard Seiler, piano, will exhibit “A Vision of Hills—Piano Trio.”
The Chamber Arts Brass Quintet will deliver “The Flying Trapeze.” Susan Olson, mezzo-soprano, will perform “No Ordinary Woman,” and Deborah McClung-Guillory will play “Rhythm from The North Country” for piano.
Sandra Lunte and Seiler will deliver “Sonata for Flute and Piano” and Scot Humes, clarinet, will join the duo for the premier of “Like the First Bird--Sonata for Flute, Clarinet and Piano.” Humes will continue with “Buffalo Gals and Other Songs,” including: “Buffalo Gals,” “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier,” and “Frankie and Johnnie.”
Myron Turner will direct the ULM Orchestra in more of Walker’s compositions, Wednesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.
The orchestra’s program will feature David Gibson in “Concerto for Bassoon featuring David Gibson.” Also, Walker’s ”Symphony of Grace” and “Concert Suite” for symphony orchestra will be included.
A recital will showcase ULM students performing Walker’s music Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.
“Trio for Two Flutes and Clarinet,” “Theme and Variation,” and “Raise the Roof” with the Galliard Brass Quintet will highlight this program.
As part of the Faculty Artist Concert Series, a recital featuring Marilynn Gibson, trumpet, and David Gibson, bassoon, will be held March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.
The premiere performance of “Close Encounters for Bassoon and Trumpet,” written by Walker for the Gibsons will include: “First Encounter,” “Leisurely Encounter,” “Synchronized Encounter,” and “Familiar Encounter (a Dance).”
“Circus Days and Nights,” “A Play with Music for Trumpet, Bassoon, Piano, Narrator and Actors/Dancers,” based on the poetry of Robert Lax, will also be premiered on the recital. Walker will comment on the structure and intent of the composition.
Mark Clark is serving as music director, with Louis Nabors as narrator and Robin Stephens providing choreography. Along with the Gibsons, Sonia Hsu is the pianist.
