ULM family celebrates Ace's first birthday
Ace, ULM's Warhawk mascot, was flooded with hugs and high fives from maroon-clad students, faculty and staff today during his first birthday party at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Student Union Building.
The ULM family, led by President James Cofer, was celebrating more than Ace's first birthday; they were celebrating the overwhelming success of their new Warhawk mascot. Cofer thanked the ULM family for their support of Ace since his official unveiling Aug. 30, 2006.
"I just want to say thank you to the entire ULM family-students, staff, faculty, alike. Thank you for accepting and incorporating Ace into your daily life at ULM," he said. "Remember, it was the entire community that picked our mascot, and it was the students who named our mascot on this day last year. You can look around at the Warhawk gear, and you can see how much it really has been accepted."
Remarking on the palpable spirit of the ULM community during Ace's party, which included a rendition of "Happy Birthday" and a slideshow highlighting Ace's activities this year, Charly Girod, a senior insurance major from Olla, said, "I think the spirit on campus is really great, and Ace's birthday party was a big success. A lot of students turned out. Ace really sets the atmosphere. It's been a lot of fun."
Jay Bulot, department head of gerontology, sociology and political science, enjoyed Ace's party with his wife and two young children. Commenting on the excitement of Ace's birthday, he said, "I think it's fantastic. I think Ace has done a great job, getting involved in the community."
The ULM family enjoyed birthday cake, party favors, and a parting line from a slideshow featuring Ace: "Legends are not born, they are hatched."
