ULM grad performs in flute recital Sept. 18

After graduating with a music degree from ULM in 2000, Ryan Rice went on to study in France and become one of the very few Americans to be named a semifinalist in the 2005 Jean-Pierre Rampal International Flute Competition.

On Monday, Sept. 18 he’ll return to ULM to perform in a special flute recital at 7:30 p.m. in Biedenharn Hall.

Rice, who received a bachelor’s of music degree, studied with Sandre Lunte, associate professor of music. He continued his flute studies with Ransom Wilson, and received a master’s of music from Yale in 2002.  Rice was named a Fulbright Scholar and traveled to Paris where he lived for nine months and studied flute with Philippe Pierlot. While in France, Rice placed second in the European Competition of Music in Picardie, France.

Rice, who was Interim Principal Flutist with the Baton Rouge Symphony during the 2003-2004 season, has attended the Aspen Summer Music Festival, placed first in the Mid South Flute Festival Young Artist Competition, and performed in the flute sections of Monroe, South Arkansas, Shreveport, and Wallingford Symphonies. He has attended and performed in numerous master classes around the world. He is currently completing his doctoral study at Rutgers University, where he studies with Bart Feller.

During the Sept. 18 recital, Rice will be accompanied by pianist Colette Valentine, who has performed in New York City's Merkin Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, and Carnegie Recital Hall; the Corcoran and National Galleries, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; Suntory Hall and Casals Hall in Tokyo; Hoam Hall in Seoul; and the Louvre in Paris.

She has recently appeared as concerto soloist with the New Jersey City University Symphony Orchestra, the Antara Chamber Orchestra, and the North Shore Symphony Orchestra. She also performs at the Grand Teton Music Festival each summer, and her ensemble, Ecco Trio, has repeatedly toured the United States and Japan to critical acclaim.

As a free-lance musician in New York City, Valentine performs with singers and instrumentalists of every variety, and has collaborated on recordings for the Albany, Antara, CRI, fontec, and Well-Tempered labels.

She serves as assisting pianist for numerous national and international competitions and master classes, including the Washington International String Competition, Young Concert Artists, Concert Artist Guild, and the William Kapell International Piano Competition.

She is on the faculties of New Jersey City University, Long Island University/CWPost, and the Interlochen Summer Chamber Music Conference. Valentine received a B.M. and a M.M. from the University of Maryland, and a D.M.A. from Stony Brook University.
