Florida school’s football field renamed to honor ULM alum

University of Louisiana at Monroe alum Vincent Zappone made quite an impression during his 41-year coaching career at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Fla.—they decided to rename the football field in his honor Oct. 27.

Zappone received his bachelor’s degree in education from ULM in 1953 after being selected the university football team captain in 1952.

He continued playing football after joining the Army, making it to the All-Army team in 1953. He followed his term of service by teaching social studies and coaching all four sports at St. James High School in Bay City, Mich.

Zappone began teaching and coaching football, wrestling and golf at Chaminade-Madonna in 1965. During the first three years, his football team finished second in the district. In 1968, they won first place with a record of 10-0. Zaponne and his assistants would later win six more district championships. His career record for the school’s football team stands at 89-35.

Zappone also served as Chaminade-Madonna’s athletic director as well as a social studies and physical education teacher. Today, he continues assisting the school as the coach of the boys’ golf team.
