World-renowned Flutist and Composer to Visit University of Louisiana at Monroe

World-renowned flutist and composer, Gary Schocker, will be in residence at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25.

Schocker’s visit is part of ULM’s Guest Artist Concert Series; he is a guest artist for the Louisiana Flute Society Festival. On Friday, March 24, from 5-7, Schocker will teach a small, informal master class for ULM flutists, interested music majors and music faculty, and other interested and invited guests.

Saturday, March 25 is the Louisiana Flute Society Festival, run by Sandra Lunte, associate professor of music. Schocker will present a master class in Biedenharn Recital Hall from 10 a.m. to noon, and a recital at 7:30 that evening. Both events on Saturday are open to attendees of the Louisiana Flute Society Festival.

Registration forms and a complete schedule of events are available online at www.ulm.edu/music or by contacting Sandra Lunte at 318-342-1578. The evening recital is free to ULM students, faculty and staff with ID. Tickets may be purchased for the evening concert only for $10, as available, or may be reserved by calling 318-342-1569.

Lunte, associate professor of music at ULM, has enjoyed performing Schocker’s compositions for many years. In June 2003, Lunte attended a master class in New York taught by Schocker that changed her life with his positive teaching. After being named Biedenharn Endowed Professor in Music, Lunte and Elizabeth Richter, professor of music at Ball State University, commissioned a piece from Schocker for flute and harp. “Chimera” was premiered by Lunte and Richter at the 2005 National Flute Convention in San Diego. The flute and harp duo is in the process of recording its first compact disc, which will feature Schocker’s work.

Gary Schocker is a world-renowned flutist as well as an award-winning composer with over 100 compositions in publication, primarily with Theodore Presser. He has published more pieces for the flute than any other living composer. His engagements have included performances with the New York Philharmonic (under Michael Tilson Thomas), the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the West German Sinfonia and an extended tour with I Solisti Italiani as well as solo recitals in New York, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, and elsewhere. Schocker has collaborated with many artists on stage, including Pinchas Zuckerman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Earl Wild, Jessye Norman, Julius Baker, James Levine, James Galway, Bruno Canino, Oscar Shumsky, Eduardo Fernandez, Jean-Philippe Collard, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He concertizes in duo with guitarist Jason Vieaux.
