Composer in Residence to visit ULM

Eric Ewazen, eminent composer and faculty member of the Juilliard School of Music, will visit ULM’s School of Visual and Performing Arts March 6-8 as a Composer in Residence.

Ewazen, the recipient of numerous composition awards and prizes, has composed a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles. These works will be featured in a concert of Ewazen’s music on Wednesday, March 8 at 2 p.m. in the Biedenharn Recital Hall. ULM assistant professor John David Smith will host the event.

Smith will perform Ewazen’s “Sonata for Horn and Piano” with Tech assistant professor and pianist Steele Moegle. Smith will be joined by ULM associate professor Sandra Lunte for a movement from the composer’s “Ballade, Pastorale and Dance” and by the Chamber Arts Brass Quintet for a movement of his brass quintet “Frost Fire.” ULM associate professor David Gibson will also perform a movement from Ewazen’s “Bassoon Concerto.”

This concert will feature a discussion with Ewazen about his compositional approach, his works and his thoughts about the current music scene. Ewazen will also participate in band clinics hosted by ULM Director of Bands Derle Long, a vocal repertoire clinic hosted by ULM Biedenharn Endowed Chair Corey Trahan, a composition seminar hosted by ULM assistant professor Mel Mobley, and a lecture/performance seminar hosted by ULM assistant professor Marilynn Gibson.

As part of the Faculty Artist Concert Series, ULM professor Christopher Thompson, violinist, and LSU professor Michael Gurt, pianist, will perform a Duo Recital. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Biedenharn Recital Hall. Tickets are $7 for the general public and free for ULM students, faculty and staff with I.D.
