ULM staff member receives Business and Professional Women honor

Annette Tangye, assistant director of human resources at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, was recently named the Individual Development Representative for the Louisiana Federation of Business and Professional Women. She will go on to represent Louisiana at the Business and Professional Women (BPW)/USA national conference in Dallas from July 18-23.

"It is an honor to represent the Louisiana Federation of Business and Professional Women," Tangye said. "BPW has provided me with many opportunities throughout the past four years, such as being the Immediate Past President of the Monroe/West Monroe organization. I look forward to competing nationally. I am pleased the women of BPW have faith that I will be a positive representative."

Tangye qualified for the honor at a speak-off June 9 in Lafayette at the State Conference for the Louisiana Federation of Business and Professional Women. She addressed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII and the reality of pay equities and prevention of sexual harassment within the workplace in her five-minute speech. Her two-minute impromptu speech centered on job motivation. She furthered impressed judges with responses to questions concerning her association with BPW, who was the most influential person in her career life, and how she balanced work, school and family responsibilities.

Business and Professional Women/USA promotes "equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information." BPW/USA fosters the success of working women by providing career advancement resources, work life strategies and personal and professional connections.

The representative selection process is done through local and state speech competitions. Candidates must complete a training course designed to develop leadership skills for women in the workplace. The course consists of a 14-module program involving topics like skills in communication, public speaking, leadership and negotiating as well as interviewing techniques.

Candidates are then eligible to enter their state speak-off competition, which consists of a five-minute prepared speech, a two-minute impromptu speech and a 10-minute interview with three judges. The candidate who excels in these three areas is selected as the state representative and moves on to compete at the national conference.
