ULM program receives grant from U.S. Department of Education

Thanks to a recent $335,420 grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, ULM's Educational Talent Search program will continue to help area high school students get to college.

The award is an important one, said James Cozine, director of Educational Talent Search at ULM. "This award will allow the Talent Search program to continue offering academic services that encourage those high school students with the potential to succeed in postsecondary education to stay in high school until graduation, and then enroll in the university of their choice."

The program identifies students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education and provides them with academic, career and financial counseling. Students also benefit from ACT workshops and campus visits.

Talent Search staff members have targeted 10 local high schools and middle schools to work with during the next four years, which is the duration of the grant. The grant is subject to yearly renewal.

The Talent Search program has been housed at ULM since 1981. Cozine has been with the department since 1983.
