ULM Ready to Open Newest Student Apartments

Options for student housing at the University of Louisiana at Monroe received another boost in the form of the newly completed Bayou Building Suites, occupying the former Olin Hall site. Continuing in the tradition of completion on-schedule and under-budget, the doors open to students on Fri., Jan. 13.

The new accommodations are comprised of 80 units and 159 beds, including handicap accessible units for students’ convenience.

Each unit consists of two private bedrooms that open into a common area allowing space for two dorm-sized refrigerators and a microwave. While roommates will share the full bathroom facilities, the open space includes a sink for independent access.

Amenities for each bedroom include cable and high-speed Internet access, separate phone lines, full length mirrors on the closets, and nine-feet ceilings.

“This is recognition of how much students value their privacy,” said Tresea Buckhaults, Director of Residential Life.

Each of the three stories contains a common study room. The second and third floors also have a separate social lounge, complete with televisions and furniture chosen by various student group committees. Also available on each floor are laundry rooms and public computers for students who might not have their own.

The first floor will include a lobby and mailroom. Also available is a conference room capable of being rented by outside groups and used by university organizations with scheduled events. Other conference room benefits allow for use of a warming kitchen and outside terrace with a scenic view of Bayou DeSiard.

There are 135 parking spaces on site with an adjacent parking lot for any overflow.

Student housing will include seven price alternatives for students. The new Bayou Building Suites fall into the mid-range category.

“We’re very competitive to local apartment communities, especially when you factor in utilities,” said Camille Currier, assistant dean of student services. “There is no other university in Louisiana with better accommodations.”

Bayou Village Apartments on Bon Aire Drive are the high-end residential alternative open to students. The traditional double occupancy dorm option also remains attainable in the form of the improved Masur Hall and the completely renovated Ouachita and Madison Halls.

Residential construction continues on the ULM campus. The building going up in the former Slater Hall location will be traditional double occupancy. The building next to it also currently under construction will include private room suites.
