Symphonies to Appear at Concert in Conjunction with Music Conference

The Division of Music at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will present the ULM Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony in concert on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jack Howard Auditorium at the Monroe Civic Center. There is no admission charge for this performance. This concert is presented in conjunction with the Southern Regional Music Conference that will meet Feb.23-25 in Monroe.

The Symphony Orchestra will open the performance with the overture to the opera The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The orchestra will also perform a movement from Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, Opus 88. The orchestra is conducted by Myron Turner, assistant professor of music at ULM.

The music selected for the Wind Symphony performance has a distinct Monroe flavor to it. The Wind Symphony will perform La Mezquita de Cordoba by Emmy award winning composer and Ouachita Parish High School graduate Julie Giroux. The ensemble will also play An American Elegy by Monroe native Frank Ticheli, now chairman of the theory and composition department at the University of Southern California. The program will conclude with the world premiere of Diamond Jubilee Gallop, composed by ULM graduate Andy Isca in celebration of ULM's 75th anniversary. Isca is an on-air personality for public radio station KEDM. The performance will include Whirlwinds by Richard Saucedo and Sarabande and Polka by Malcolm Arnold.

Guest artist for this performance will be Dr. Micah Everett, professor of trombone, euphonium and tuba at ULM. Everett is Principal Trombonist in the Monroe Symphony Orchestra and is also trombonist in the Chamber Arts Brass Quintet at ULM. He was previously Principal Trombonist in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra and trombonist in the Northern Brass Trio. He has performed with the Cedar Rapids, North Carolina, Greensboro, Fayetteville, Mississippi, and Delta Symphony Orchestras; the Choral Society of Greensboro; the Nelson Riddle Orchestra; the Bill Shepherd Big Band, the Waterloo Municipal Band; the Market Street Brass Quintet; and pit orchestras for numerous shows and other programs. He was a finalist in the Frank Smith Solo Competition at the 2003 International Trombone Festival in Helsinki, Finland and won the National Solo Competition (Tenor Division III) at the Eastern Trombone Workshop that same year. He performed the Gotkovsky Concerto at the 2005 Eastern Trombone Workshop. He was also a member of the William Cramer Trombone Choir at the 2005 International Trombone Festival in New Orleans. In addition, Everett has performed as soloist with the Raleigh and UNCG Symphony Orchestras, the UNCG Symphonic Band, the UNI Wind Symphony, and the Waterloo Municipal Band. Everett will be featured in a euphonium solo entitled Rule Britannia.
