Poetry Reading Feb. 22 at ULM

In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Louisiana at Monroe English Studies Society (ESS) will host an African-American Poetry Reading Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the overhang in front of the library.

ULM students, staff and faculty, as well as Monroe community members are invited to read/perform a short work by their favorite African American writers.

This event will celebrate important contributions made by African-American authors, said ESS President Latoya Clark.

“Indeed, this is a celebration and a salute to Black writers. Many of these writers’ works reflect a respect for our roots and culture, the Black community's response to events and changing times, and more importantly, the desire to push for African-American advancement in both social and economic Venues,” she said.

“Considering their great contributions to this nation's history, I believe it is only fair to recognize these authors.”

Some scheduled readers include Rod Washington, media coordinator for the city of Monroe (at noon) and Stuart Clason, grants and special projects coordinator for Congressman Rodney Alexander (at 11:45 a.m.)

This event is also sponsored by the NAACP.
