Foreign Language Department sponsors essay contest

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Foreign Languages Department sponsored its sixth annual French Essay Contest for high school students in November.

Area high school students were awarded certificates, volumes of Louisiana literature published in French and cash awards at the National French Week banquet, which was organized by local French teachers and held at Bubba Luigi¹s restaurant.

Presenters and contest organizers Fredrick Adams and Chris Michaelides judged entries in two categories, intermediate (French II) and advanced (French III and IV). Students chose their own topics for the essays, which were between 400 and 600 words in length. Multiple prizes were awarded in each category due to the number and high quality of submissions.

Students who won honors were:

On the intermediate level: first prize, Chelsea Knight, Northeast Baptist School; second prize, Erin Tyler and Blake Wooten, Ouachita Christian School; third prize, Claire Tilmont, Cedar Creek School, and Courtney Fewell, Ouachita Christian School; and honorable mention, Samuel Clary and Luke Brewer, Northeast Baptist School, and Aleks Simicevic, Cedar Creek School.

On the advanced level: first prize, Katie Tiner, Ouachita Parish High School, and Autumn Autrey, Ruston High School; second prize, James Meredith, West Ouachita High School, and William Clay Turner, Ruston High School; third prize, David Patton, Ouachita Parish High School, and Kate Rhymes, Cedar Creek High School; and honorable mention, Ross Frazier, Ruston High School, Daniel Dupree, Ouachita Christian School, Christiana Dietzen, Cedar Creek School, and Sydney Harold, Ouachita Parish High School.
