ULM students donate $2,000 to local service agency

ULM’s Freshman Year Seminar 101/53 class donated $2,000 to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home during a check presentation Thursday, December 7.

In the past, FRYS classes have had a community service component and each instructor decided how he/she wanted to handle it. Students collected food for the food bank, gifts for the needy, and found other ways to positively impact the community.

This year, the FRYS coordinator in the Student Success Center, Mary Elizabeth Sewell, decided that it would be beneficial to all the freshman students to work on one project that would promote school spirit in light of the new mascot and, at the same time, impact a local service organization. This way the students would learn that they could make a difference as an individual by working collectively toward the same end.

The FRYS students chose to order ULM Warhawks maroon wristbands for students to sell. A class period was devoted to educating the students about all the service organizations in the Monroe/West Monroe region and what they do. The FRYS teaching assistants began by giving each student three wristbands to sell for $1 each.

Initial funds were used to cover the cost of the wristbands; anything over that amount would be donated to a charitable organization, to be chosen by the class that raised the most money.

FRYS 101, section 53, taught by Michelle Johnston of the College of Education and assisted by FRYS teaching assistant Nathan Hall, won by selling 332 wristbands and chose the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home as the recipient of the funds raised by all the sections.
