ULM representatives attend Mortar Board National Conference
ULM was well represented at the Mortar Board National Conference July 28-30 in Columbus, Ohio.
Rob Carroll, president of both the ULM Student Government Association and the Mortar Board chapter, and Martha Anderson, assistant dean of students at ULM as well as liaison administrator to Mortar Board, both attended the national senior honor society’s conference, intended to promote scholarship, leadership and service. Outgoing members extend membership to rising seniors seen as demonstrating those traits.
“After learning more about what Mortar Board stands for and how well it’s organized, I knew that I’d be in for a wonderful experience, and that I’d be able to bring a lot of new ideas back to ULM’s chapter,” Carroll said.
He mentioned that the conference offered the opportunity to meet students from across the nation as they blended abstract discussions about general leadership with practical training sessions on efficiently coordinating a chapter.
While there, Carroll made the runoff for student representative to the National Council and attracted the attention of the national staff with a well-received case study summation. He intends to honor their invitation to attend the 2007 conference in an administrative or organizational capacity.
“When I raised my hand to run for president at the first Mortar Board meeting [at ULM], I didn’t really know what I’d be getting into,” he said. “Attending the conference gave me a comprehensive depiction of Mortar Board, both in what ideals it holds and how it attempts to exemplify those ideals through action. Now, I feel equipped to lead the ULM Mortar Board chapter toward its best year ever.”
Anderson was elected as an alumni representative to the National Council of Mortar Board.
Carroll said he was pleased Anderson was chosen. “I couldn’t be happier for Dr. Anderson. She exhibits incredible enthusiasm for the organization. Nobody is more passionate than she about scholarship, leadership, and service; I know she’ll do a great job on the Council.”
