New Show at Bry Hall’s New Gallery

Eldred Hudson, associate professor of art at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, currently has an exhibition of his work in Bry Gallery, on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The show consists of large-scale, brightly-colored collages. Each piece is made by cutting up found images, combining them in startling ways and juxtaposing them with pure color paper fragments. The content of the works is not merely formal, however. Rather the collages also embody an evocative exploration of some of the important issues facing all of us in society today. For example, he explores traditional roles and expected behavior norms and how our concept of these, inculcated in us by the media, affects our self-image. Several of the collages express the emotional issues surrounding a personal battle with serious illness. One particularly intriguing work embodies the tragic and all too common story of a woman named “Virginia.”
 
Hudson brings viewers into his work with bold scale, wonderful, singing color that comes off the wall, and a huge variety of interesting textures. Humor plays a vital role in his work as well. At the same time, however, he keeps us looking at his work, as he makes us think and contemplate how the issues he takes up might affect us, too.
 
The show will hang at Bry Gallery until Nov. 22 and the gallery hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
