ULM Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Wins Prestigious Award

ULM Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate student Swapnalai Sawant won this year's Kilmer Prize. This is a national, competitive and prestigious research award offered by the American Pharmacist Association (AphA, originally American Pharmaceutical Association) and American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP).

Sawant had to compete with both national and international graduate and undergraduate natural products chemistry students for the award. Sawant will receive the Kilmer Prize after presenting her research project during the award session of the 46th American Society of Pharmacognosy Annual Meeting, July 23 - July 27 in Corvallis, OR.

This is the second consecutive year for ULM students to win American Society of Pharmacognosy Student Research Awards. Both undergraduate and graduate students in schools or colleges of pharmacy are eligible for this award, which has no society membership requirements on either the applicant or their supervisor.

The Kilmer Prize was established in 1935 by the American Pharmacists Association in honor of Dr. Frederick Barnett Kilmer who served as the scientific director of the laboratories of Johnson & Johnson for 45 years beginning in 1888. Dr. Kilmer was a key player in Johnson & Johnson's promotion of antiseptic methods in hospital settings. He was a prolific and respected authority on scientific and medical topics and influenced the acceptance of these novel procedures and methods through his articles in the Johnson & Johnson magazines, including "Red Cross Notes" and "The Red Cross Messenger." Dr. Kilmer is also credited with the development of Johnson's Baby Powder, still one of the most trusted products in the world.
