ULM Bry Art Gallery Hosts Alumni Exhibition

The Bry Art Gallery at the University of Lousiana at Monroe is currently showing a two-person exhibition of paintings and collages by Barry Darling of Tully, N.Y., and Jerry Wilson of Calhoun.

Both artists were classmates at the university in the late '60s and early '70s. After graduation they embarked upon careers as professional artists in different regions of the country, but kept up a correspondence and a dialog over the years.

In their exhibition, both artists have presented acrylic and oil paintings on canvas, panel and paper. The unifying factor is the use of collage or foreign materials attached to the painting surface. In some instances the collage concept has been expanded to include assemblage: the attachment of a three-dimensional, found objects to the painting surface.

Collectively, Darling and Wilson have based their compositions on predominantly figurative imagery. The dominant painterly attribute of their works is the technique of layering, or the addition of thin, transparent glazes/washes of color conveying a complex visual and spatial statement to a viewer.

On Friday the 23rd, the artists were re-introduced to local patrons at a reception in the Bry Art Gallery.

This exhibition will be on view through February 12. The Bry Art Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
