TeachNortheast Holds Information Session

The University of Louisiana at Monroe will hold an information session for TeachNortheast, its Alternative Certification Program, Monday, March 1st from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the ULM Alumni Center located at 4400 Bon Aire Drive.

TeachNortheast is an innovative approach to improving student achievement in northeast Louisiana by recruiting, selecting and training individuals from well-rounded backgrounds who possess the relentless drive to achieve results. Although northeast Louisiana school districts are in great need of math, science, and special education teachers, TeachNortheast is not looking for specific types of applicants.

TeachNortheast recruiter Candice Frazier says, "We want people who possess the commitment, flexibility and drive necessary to achieve success in the classroom. We want candidates who will use their experience and energy to ensure that all students excel academically."

Last year's program attracted over 200 applicants from various backgrounds including military, business, social work, accounting and law. A bachelor's degree (minimum 2.5 GPA) is a prerequisite for program admission; however, no previous education coursework is required.

The program also serves teachers who are currently employed by a school district and interested in pursuing certification. Participants must meet all program entrance requirements to begin intensive graduate course work in July 2004. The graduate course work will continue during the 2004-2005 school year and possibly the next summer. Program participants can pursue certification through the Practitioner Teacher Program (21 academic hours) or the Master's Degree Program (36 academic hours) with a focus in early childhood, elementary, secondary, or special education. Throughout the TeachNortheast program, participants will have access to a network of ongoing support and professional development resources to help them succeed in raising student achievement in the classroom.
