ULM TheatreWorks Announces 2004-2005 Season

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's TheatreWorks, the producing arm of the Division of Theatre and Dance, will present a 2004-2005 season of entertaining and challenging works. All performances take place in the Brown Theatre Complex ­ a three theatre facility ­ on the ULM campus. Season tickets and patron sponsorships are now available. New this year are Associate Producer credits for each production, available to businesses wishing to support the theatre, its students, the arts, and the University while promoting their businesses.

The season opens with Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Three Tall Women. The play deals with the lives of women as they progress from youth to frail old age. Performances will be held in Spyker Theatre Sept. 23-25 and Sept. 30-Oct 2.

Following is Bertolt Brecht's Epic masterpiece The Good Person of Setzuan. The tale is a clever one. Three Chinese Gods come to earth looking for one good person. The only good person they find is the prostitute Shen Te. She does good deeds, but her goodness brings evil. How can one cope? Setzuan is presented in an adaptation by Pulitzer and Tony-winning playwright Tony Kushner, with a new score by ULM Director of Visual and Performing Arts, Dr. Keith White, and features a professional guest artist from Broadway. Performance dates are November 11-13 and 18-20.

2005 begins with Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy about writing musical comedies, Merrily We Roll Along. The show looks at the lives of three friends as they create their personal and professional lives. Instead of seeing life as it happened, Merrily moves backward in time to see how the people who exist today became the persons and artists they are. The production plays March 10-12 and 17-19.

The final production of the theatre season is Neil Simon's wistful, almost-autobiographical comedy Brighton Beach Memoirs. The touching look at family life is scheduled April 28-30 and May 5-7.

A special presentation, not included in the theatre season, is the romantic comedy Talley's Folly by Lanford Wilson. The heartwarming tale of two misfits who find each other will be presented as a special benefit for charity. Production dates are January 14, 15 and 16. (Due to the charitable nature of the presentation, season tickets are not valid for Talley's Folly.)
