Mortar Board Wins Awards
ULM's Mortar Board chapter received coveted awards at the their annual national convention. Catherine Dowd, Mortar Board President at ULM for the 2004-05 academic year, and Dr. Martha Upshaw, ULM's Assistant Dean of Students and Chairman of the Leadership Committee for the National Council of Mortar Board and Section Coordinator for Virginia and the Carolina colleges and universities, traveled to Columbus, Ohio, recently for the conference. ULM was one of 220 chapters of Mortar Board representing colleges and universities nationwide.
ULM's chapter won the highly coveted Silver Torch of Excellence Award in scholarship, leadership, and service under the faculty advisor, Dr. Melgardt M. De Villiers, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics ULM's Outstanding Student of the Year, as named by the Student Government Association for two straight years, was pharmacy graduate, Davey Legendre, who was Chapter president during this past year. ULM's chapter also won the Award for Excellence in chapter programming with the Aids Walk sponsored by the ULM Mortar Board chapter.
Mortar Board, Inc. is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service. Mortar Board began in 1918 as the first national organization honoring senior college women. When the Society opened its membership to men in 1975, the organization maintained a tribute to the founders and its heritage by strengthening the Preamble to the Constitution by including a commitment to the advancement of the status of women.
