ULM Education Students Volunteer to Participate in Social Studies Summit

Ten Students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe along with Dr. Ava Pugh, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, and Jerrilene Washington, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, will attend the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies Summit in Natchitoches, Louisiana on April 3.

Pugh, who sits on the state board for the Louisiana council for the social studies said, "The students volunteered to pay their own way to go; this shows their commitment and desire to go the extra mile for education."

Pugh, who teaches the undergraduate and graduate methods class in social studies along with Washington, who teaches the undergraduate and graduate math methods course, will both be presenting at the summit.

ULM has three groups that will present at the summit: Tanya Dooley, Neena Cloessner, Rhonda Till, Amberly Harper and Katy Sanderson will present "Political Science in Louisiana." Emily Whitley and Rebecca Ellerbe will present "Louisiana Geography. Brande' Henderson, Alison Raley and Robin Albritton will present "Louisiana Symbols."

These students are enrolled in methods classes on the professional block. They are a semester away from student teaching and are practicing writing and presenting lesson plans to peer groups and students at area schools.
