ULM Medications Management Clinic Offers Help to Senior Citizens
The University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Pharmacy and the Ouachita Council on Aging have partnered up to develop a Medication Management Clinic. The specialized clinic will address medication and other health-related concerns of area seniors, such as blood pressure, cholesterol and depression. Dr. Edwin Adams, ULM Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and a Certified Geriatric Pharmacotherapist, will be directing the clinic. "This clinic developed out of a need to address the specific needs of elderly patients. Our primary focus will be medication safety and efficacy, diabetes, cholesterol, and hypertension. However, we are trained to address any medication-related problem in any disease state. We will not be a replacement for their regular physician care. Instead, we will fill the role that seems to be missing from senior health care and provide specialized drug safety and efficacy monitoring. This type of service, through a Council on Aging, is the first of its kind in Louisiana and the nation. We hope it will serve as a model program for other Councils and also hope that it will further demonstrate the critical need for pharmacists trained in the medication management needs of our elderly in Ouachita Parish," Adams said.
The clinic, which began this month, is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment at the Ouachita Council on Aging located at 2407 Ferrand. Consultation services are free, however, a small fee will be charged for some screenings to help cover needed supplies. For more information or to schedule an appointment please contact Bobbie Gaar at 387-0535.
