Hear talks on "Stem Cell Ethics" this spring at ULM

"Stem Cell Ethics" is the topic for this semester's Showcase sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. A series of three talks on different aspects of this issue will be presented to all interested individuals.

The first of these talks is set for Wed., Jan. 29, at 6:00 p.m. in the Airway Sciences Auditorium, Room 134. Dr. Ann Findley, Associate Professor of Biology and the Mayme and Tom Scott Endowed Professor in Teaching Excellence at ULM, will discuss "The Science of Stem Cells". Dr. Findley will provide an introduction to the cell biology involved in discovering usable stem cells and the techniques used to derive them from human tissue. Dr. Findley has served as Visiting Scientist, HASYLAB, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY and held postdoctoral positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Louisiana State University. She is the author of more than 20 research papers and one book.

The next showcase will be on Tues., Feb. 4, at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Center on the 7th Floor of the ULM Library. Dr. Ernlé W. D. Young, Emeritus Professor from Stanford University School of Medicine, will address the issue of "Stem Cell Research: Therapeutic Possibilities and Ethical Controversies". Dr. Young is a renowned Bioethicist. He currently is the Chief Officer for the Protection of Research Participants at NASA/Ames Research Center and chairs the Ethics Advisory Board for Geron Corporation. Dr. Young is the author or co-author of four books, fifteen chapters, and more than 40 articles on topics in biomedical ethics.

On Wed., Feb. 12, at 6:00 p.m. in the Airway Sciences Auditorium, Room 134, His Excellency Most Reverend William B. Friend, Bishop of Shreveport, will discuss "The Catholic Perspective on Stem Cell Research and Use". William Benedict Friend is a member of the Catholic Academy of Sciences, U.S.A., the New York Academy of Sciences, AAAS, the Board of Directors of The Center for Bioethics and Health Law-Shreveport, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. He presently is Secretary of the USCCB and Chairman of the Board of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA). He chaired the Committee on Science and Human Values, USCCB, 1990-93. In 1993, he was elected Academician to the Catholic Academy of Sciences in the U.S. and has served as a consultant to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
