ULM Celebrates Women's History Month
The University of Louisiana at Monroe is planning several activities to celebrate women's history month this march. Below is a complete list of activities. All are open to the public unless otherwise noted.
February 28th (Friday) noon- Opening Ceremonies- Proclamation of March as Women's History Month by Mayor Jamie Mayo. Speaker Peggy Ellis, Vice President of Learning and Development at State Farm. Title "Success at What Cost?" by the fountain
March 7th (Friday) noon on the sixth floor of the library- "Women and Music" by Rebecca Dodson Webster
March 9th (Sunday) 11a.m. 7th floor of the Library. Brunch student/teacher on campus brunch.(On campus activity-not open to public)
March 10th (Monday) 4:30 p.m. in Administration Building Room 395- Philosophy symposium/debate, "Are the moralities of men and women different?"
March 12th (Wednesday) noon. "Girlosophy". Issues specific to Women. Presented by Monica Moore.
March 14th (Friday) noon in Peoples Park I (on ULM campus south of Strauss Hall)- "Poets in the Park: Readings from Poetry Written by Women." Bring a blanket and your lunch. If you'd like to participate in the reading, bring a poem by your favorite female poet.
March 18th (Tuesday) noon. Spyker Theatre. Women in Politics. Speaker, Dr. Rose Harris, Director of Center from Women and Government, from Nicholls State University.
March 20th (Thursday) 4 p.m. International students discuss the roles of women in their societies and how they differ from our local culture. -2nd floor of the Student Union Building.
March 21st (Friday) Baseball game $1.00 off entrance fee for all women in attendance.
March 25th (Tuesday) 7:00pm. Nursing Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. "Samantha 'Rastles' the Woman Question". "Based on the 19th century humorist Marietta Holley, features the farm wife and rustic philosopher Samantha Smith Allen (Jane Curry*) as she "rastles" with questions concerning history's treatment of women, rights denied by church, women's powerlessness before the law, social status, role assumptions and more." (Approximately 50 to 60 minutes followed by a question period to Samantha). Reception to follow.
March 26th (Wednesday) 7:00 p.m. Nursing Auditorium Doors open at 6:30pm. "Nice Girls Don't Sweat". Jane Curry *performs/tells "stories about women''s experiences with sports and exercise over time. Her verbal meanderings engage the enduring themes of physical capacities, propriety, and femininity." (Approximately 75-80 minutes). Reception to follow.
March 27th (Thursday) 7:00 p.m. Nursing Auditorium Doors open at 6:30 p.m. "Miz Wizard's Science Secrets". Jane Curry* performs/tells "stories about women's contributions to science, engineering, invention and math.about revolutionary research and media portrayalsabout obstacles faced and overcome by women whose passion is discovery. Meet Nobel Prize winners and girl inventors." (Approximately 75 minutes) Reception to follow.
News Star Essay contest for grades 9-12. Deadline February
28th. Prizes for 1st-3rd place. Mail to News Star, 411 Nth 4th,

*Jane Curry's live performances center around women's history
and gender equality. Dr. Curry with a Ph.D. In English from University
