New Kinesiology Department at ULM

The Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is now known as the Department of Kinesiology. The name change went into effect last spring when the Board of Regents granted approval to consolidate the two bachelor's programs of Physical Education and Health and Physical Education into a single bachelor's program in Kinesiology. Beginning Fall 2003, the new department will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with concentrations in undergraduate health and physical education (teacher certification), exercise science, community health education and promotion, and fitness and sports studies. The Health and Physical Education Certification Concentration prepares students to teach K-12 health and physical education by providing coursework and experiences in the area of health and physical education. The Exercise Science Concentration prepares students for careers in the clinical/preventative settings including cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy; hospital based wellness programs as well as advanced study in exercise science. The Community Health Education and Promotion concentration equips students with background courses and field experiences that qualify them for entry level positions in community health. The Fitness and Sports Studies concentration prepare students for leadership roles in fitness and sports. Also, the Department of Kinesiology received notification in Spring 2003 that the undergraduate physical education teacher preparation program has been approved for NASPE/NCATE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education/National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) re-accreditation. The program was honored at a recognition ceremony for college and university programs that have received NASPE approval according to the NASPE/NCATE standards. The ceremony took place at the AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) National Convention in Philadelphia.
