ULM's Institute Of Gerontology Offers Condensed Classes And A Compressed Video Course

The Institute of Gerontology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is offering a unique learning opportunity for this summer and fall.

ULM offers for summer II: Seminar in Death and Dying, SOCL 425-51E. This is a graduate or undergraduate class. It's an exploration of the social organization of dying, including a view on cross-cultural perspectives on death, treatment of the dying patient, and the grief process. It will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, July 9 through August 1, from 5:00 ­ 9:00 p.m.

ULM also offers for Summer II: Counseling with Special Populations: Mature and Aged Populations, COUN 650A- 01. This is a graduate level course. It will focus on the study of unique features and problems in working with special populations. This class is offered on Friday July 5, July 12, and July 26, from 5:00 ­ 9:00 p.m. It will be offered again on Saturday July 6, July 13, and July 27, from 9:00 ­ 5:00 p.m., and again on Sunday July 7, July 14, and July 28, from 1:00 ­ 5:00 p.m.

Dr. Chris Johnson, Professor of Gerontology at ULM says, "These are condensed courses for people wanting to get gerontology credentials. These courses in gerontology go toward either an 18-hour certificate or a 39-hour M.A. in Gerontology at ULM. Most courses are condensed into weekend formats, evening courses, interactive cable or an Internet course. People with an undergraduate degree in any field or an M.A., MSW or Ph. D. who want to specialize with a gerontology credential can take either of these courses which lead toward the 18 hour certificate of M.A. in Gerontology to accompany their current degree. These classes aren't always offered, so it's a good time to take advantage of them."

Johnson also says, "The highest percentage of the elderly in Louisiana are in this part (the Northeast) of the state. Caregivers are needed in areas of rehabilitation, counseling, home health, assisted living, and nursing homes. Gerontology is a top 10-job area in the U.S. as we are experiencing the "Graying of America".

Also for the fall, the Institute of Gerontology at ULM is offering a Compressed Video course: Gerontology 512-98V Social Gerontology.

This course is an examination of social aspects of adjustment to aging, attitudes towards aging, social-psychological and sociological theories of aging, successful aging family pattern, intergenerational relationships, leisure, and retirement. Attention will be given to demographic changes, middle ages, minority aged, and adult socialization.

The course format for Gerontology 512 will be taught via Compressed Video as part of ULM's Electronic Learning Courses. Students will expect to attend all classes at their local Compressed Video remote site. All lectures, assignments, and general communication will be conducted at the remote site. This class is available to any graduate student and is not limited to health science areas. To take this class you must be an enrolled student at ULM. Applications and information are available at http://www.ulm.edu/enrollment/admissions.html. August 19 and 20 are the dates for late registration. However, there is no late fee if the student is only taking 3 course hours. The tuition for a 3-hour graduate course is $393.00. Currently there are sites available in the following areas: Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Shreveport.

The course will be taught during the fall Semester from August 26-December 9. It will be offered on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
