ULM Department of Agriculture to host High School FFA Contest

The Department of Agriculture at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be hosting a Future Farmers of America Invitational Judging Contest on Friday, March 8, 2002 starting at 9:00 a.m.

Approximately 500 participants from 23 area high schools will be competing in one of seven different contests. Contests consist of Livestock Judging, Meats Identification, Electricity, Small Engines, Welding, Floriculture, and Nursery/Landscape. The livestock judging contest consists of evaluating several classes of market or breeding cattle, swine or sheep. The meats identification contest consists of not only identifying selected retail cuts of meat, but also describing which wholesale cut and species of livestock (beef, pork or lamb) the retail cut of meat came from. Both these contests will be held at ULM's Johnson Farm. The electricity contest consists of contestants given a wiring problem and designing a wiring diagram as well as actually wiring the components of the problem together. The small engine contest consists of trouble shooting and assembling small engines. Welding consists of welding two sheets of metal using 3-4 specific welds as determined by the leader of the welding contest. Both floriculture and nursery/landscape consist of identifying plants used in these respected areas.

The contests will be held at the Agricultural Mechanization Facilities at ULM's Layton Farm on Highway 80. All contests are run by ULM faculty, individuals in the community, and students from the ULM Department of Agriculture.
