ULM holds first ever AWIS meeting

The University of Louisiana at Monroe will hold the first meeting of AWIS, the Association for Women in Science, on campus next week. AWIS is a national organization dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. AWIS is currently establishing a local chapter and a student affiliate group at ULM.

The first ever meeting at ULM will be on Monday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Student Union Building. Officers will be announced and a discussion of the portrayal of women in introductory science textbooks is scheduled. Membership is open to anyone regardless of gender who wishes to help achieve these goals.

Founders of the ULM group, Dr. Sandra Davis, Assistant Professor of Biology; and Robyn Jordan, Biology Instructor, say activities planned for later in the semester include a talk by Karen Puckett, Chief Operating Officer at CenturyTel, and the start of a Cross-Disciplinary Peer-Tutoring program among the science majors. They also hope to compile and provide information on career possibilities for women majoring in the sciences.

The only other chapter in the state of Louisiana is based in Baton Rouge. There are currently 76 chapters in the U.S.
