ULM Toxicology Students Win Top Awards At The 41st Annual Meeting Of The Society Of Toxicology (SOT)

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Predoctoral students in the Toxicology Department brought home several awards from The 41st Annual Conference of the Society of Toxicology, held in Nashville, TN in Spring. Over five thousand scientists from around the world attended. This is the world's largest meeting of leading scientists working in various areas of Toxicological Sciences.

Mr. Kartik Shankar, a senior Ph.D. student at ULM was awarded first place in the Novartis Graduate Fellowship Award. He also received the First Place award in the Mechanisms Specialty section for his paper entitled, "Protective Mechanisms against Acetaminophen Toxicity in Diabetes: Role of PPAR-a Activation". He also won First Place in the Colgate Palmolive Student Research Training Award (only one out of possible 4 awards given this year).

Senior Ph. D. student, Mr. Vishal Vaidya, also received the First Place award for his paper entitled, " Tissue Repair: A Key to Survival Following Nephrotoxic Challenge" from the Comparative Veterinary Specialty Section of SOT.

Ms. Pallavi B. Limaye, a third year Ph.D. student at ULM, was the only student to receive the Travel Award from the Comparative Toxicologic Pathology Specialty Section of SOT.

"It is extremely rare that multiple students from the same program are placed First in that many categories. This not only speaks for the high quality, nationally and internationally competitive Toxicology Training Program at ULM, but also speaks for the standard- bearing and benchmark making quality of our students," said Dr. Harihara Mehendale, ULM Professor and Kitty DeGree Endowded Chair in Toxicology.
