ULM teams are winners at the regional Association of Computing Machinery (AMC) contest

Students at the University of Louisiana at Monroe took home valuable experience and honors at a recent computer-programming contest held in Baton Rouge. The Association of Computing Machienery (AMC) holds the contest every year.

Two teams of three students went to the contest with Faculty Advisor, Troy Kammerdiener. The first team, ULM 1, was composed of three seniors: William Bentley, Daniel Hogan, and Casey Stella. The second team, ULM 2, was composed mostly of non-seniors: Bobby Campbell, Kelvin Chan, and Joe Mansour. The first team won 5th place overall, 3rd place in division II (schools with a graduate program in computer science are division I, schools without a graduate program are in division II), and placed higher than any other team from Louisiana (including teams from LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana University, and University of Louisiana at Lafayette). Kammerdiener said, "ULM's second team contributed to the overall effort and gained valuable experience for next year; they ended up placing in the middle of the pack."

ULM's two teams were selected by faculty nomination, followed by a vote of the student members of our student ACM chapter. The ACM is an international professional organization in computer science with hundreds of student chapters at colleges and universities worldwide.

This year over 65 teams from 30 different colleges and universities participated in the contest. The region that ULM competes in covers Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and is one of 11 regions in the USA and 30 regions worldwide which send winning teams to the International Programming Contest. This year the international contest will be held in Honolulu.

"We did not finish highly enough this year to advance to the International contest, but we continue to improve and were closer this year than ever before. I am very proud of our students on both teams," said Troy Kammerdiener, Team Coach and ACM Chapter Advisor from the ULM Computer Science Department.
