Lower Jackson Mound predates Poverty Point

Dr. Joe Saunder's work on the Lower Jackson mound in northeast Louisiana has revealed that the single conical mound predates Poverty Point by ca. 2000 years. Many archeologists have speculated that the Lower Jackson was part of Poverty Point. The new data raises the possibility of "continuity" between the Middle Archaic mound builders that built Watson Brake over 5000 years ago and the later Poverty Point culture (3200-3700 years ago.)

Dr. Saunders has previously drawn national attention for his work at the Watson Brake site, one of the oldest mound complexes in North America.
