ULM Museum of Natural History and Louisiana Purchase Zoological Societ present seminar

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Museum of Natural History and the Louisiana Puyrchase Zoological Society will present their third in a series of Seminars in Natural History this Thursday.

Dr. Charles Allen, Department of Biology at ULM, will be speaking on "Prairie in Louisiana." Allen's research program focuses on plant taxonomy and grassland and wetland ecology, restoration and succession. He is the author of the book "Grasses of Louisiana" and numerous popular and professional articles.

There were 2.5 million acres of prairie in southwestern Louisiana that were very similar to the midwestern U.S. prairie with big bluestem, switch grass and other plant species in common. Almost all, 99 percent, of the original prairie was plowed under and replaced by rice. Remnants of this prairie are being restored.

The free seminar will be presented Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Welcome Room of Biedenharn Museium and Gardens.
