ULM to host geography and culture workshop for teachers
April 14 is the application deadline for the 2000 Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) Summer Institute for Teachers. The Institute is being hosted by the University of Louisiana at Monroe July 12 through Aug. 4 on the ULM campus.
This summer's Institute will feature Northeast Louisiana Geography & Culture. The director of the institute is Dr. Darrell P. Kruger, an Assistant Professor of Geography at ULM. Kruger, who has been widely published in 19th century South African colonial settlement geography, has previously co-directed two Louisiana Geographic Education Alliance Summer Institutes for Teachers.
Focus of the Institute will be Northeast Louisiana in order to understand the role of geography and culture in landscape transformation from antiquity to the present. Direct instruction together with class discussions will be augmented with two guest lecturers, interaction with citizens and three field trips.
The Institute is designed primarily for full-time or regular part-time Geography, social studies, Humanities, or English teachers in elementary, middle school and high school; librarians, administrators, and guidance counselors in public, private, and parochial schools throughout the area. From the pool of applicants, 25 participants will be selected. A $400 stipend will be paid to each participant and students will be given books and photocopies of readings.
The program will meet Wednesday, July 12 through Friday, Aug. 4, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be one Saturday meeting and three scheduled Friday fieldtrips. Participants will also attend a pre-institute workshop on June 8.
Three hours of graduate credit can be earned for the course. Tuition waivers are granted to all participants. Participants will have to pay a $50 fee that covers their application fee, student I.D. card and campus parking permit.
