MONROE, LA – Eight ULM students in an advanced graphic design course recently competed in a website competition for Roux and Brew Seafood & Steakhouse, located in Ponchatoula, LA. The students were charged with recreating the website for the steakhouse, with the winner receiving $250 cash and the restaurant using the winner’s winning design.
While the students were enjoying dinner at the steakhouse after their presentations, the leaders had a hard time narrowing down to only one winner, so they chose three top website designs and offered cash rewards. The winners were Macie Hunt, Charles Hollis, and Brian Scott. Their website designs can be viewed by clicking the link in their names.
Graphic Design Professor Winnie Tomeny will assist each of the three winners with combining their websites into one final website for Roux and Brew Seafood & Steakhouse to use.
“I am passionate about setting the bar high for my students,” said Tomeny. “Students need to turn in every project as ‘portfolio worthy.’ Gaining proficient experience while they are in college is also extremely important,” she added.
During Tomeny’s Advanced Graphic Design course, she assigns several checkpoint projects, which are designed to enhance each student’s portfolio. Those projects include restaurant logo designs, restaurant menu design, and billboard design. The students’ midterm project combines billboard, menu, logo, to-go package, t-shirt, and gift card designs. The final project includes a branding manual and website design.
