The beginning of warm weather marks the beginning of hurricane season, officially
June 1-Nov. 20 for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. In 2020, a record-breaking
two tropical storms and three hurricanes hit Louisiana.
"After an overly active 2020 season, the weathermen are predicting another very active
hurricane season. A proactive approach may be the best defense against emergencies
and for disaster management," said Anita Sharma, Ph.D., director of the University
of Louisiana Monroe Gerontology program.
From 1-5 p.m., on Tuesday, May 4, ULM Gerontology in collaboration with the Governor's
Offices of Elderly Affairs, Disability Affairs, and Homeland Security will present
an emergency preparedness seminar. The Alzheimer's Association will also provide proactive
information for the caregivers of dementia patients.
May is Older American's Month with the 2021 theme "Communities of Strength." The emergency
preparedness symposium will emphasize the power of connection and engagement in building
strong communities.
"Often, the vulnerable and underserved populations are the ones that are hit the hardest
during natural disasters. Lack of adequate preparedness and lack of information about
available resources increases the vulnerability of older adults and people with disabilities.
A proactive approach helps strengthen our community during natural disasters," Sharma
said.
