Suvash Gupta, a junior majoring in art, is the most recent University of Louisiana Monroe student to receive a Sigma Delta Pi scholarship to study abroad.
This year Gupta was one of only two students, nationally, who were awarded the scholarship
to study in Spain. He spent four weeks at the University of Alcalá de Henares studying
Spanish with other students from around the world. Gupta was especially thrilled to
attend this university because Miguel de Cervantes, author of "Don Quijote de la Mancha,"
was born in the town, which is a UNESCO National Heritage Site and draws thousands
of visitors every year.
Gupta, the president of the ULM Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, was initiated in
the fall of 2017. When he learned of the opportunity to apply to study in Spain, he
immediately prepared all the documents, obtained his visa, and made preparations to
leave.
He decided to enter Europe through Germany since learning German is another objective
of this Nepalese student who already speaks English, Maithili, Hindi, Urdu, and Nepali.
Gupta completed his minor in Spanish in the fall of 2017.
Gupta, who is an accomplished artist, reported upon his return that this opportunity not
only helped him to improve his Spanish but also helped him grow as a person. He said
visiting historical places and museums which have inspired artists from around the
world, fortified his knowledge and gave him an unforgettable experience.
