Entertainer and Bastrop native Mable John returns to the area for a celebration of
her talent. John sang backup for Ray Charles and even released a few singles of her
own.
The University of Louisiana welcomes John on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. -12:05
p.m., when she will present an open Master Class in Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.
The session is free and open to the public.
Bastrop will celebrate John's 88th birthday at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Evans Business
Plaza, 710 South Washington St. Admission is free, and the community is invited to
attend.
Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m., the historic Rose Theatre will host a screening of the Academy
and Grammy Award-winning 2013 film “20 Feet from Stardom.” The documentary film features
John and other performers who served as backup singers to famous artists.
