The Ouachita Parish Women's Republican Club, a long-time supporter of the university, presented the University of Louisiana Monroe Foundation with a check for $2,300 toward its first-generation endowed scholarship in a press conference held in the 6th Floor Media Room on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.
The funds donated this year will be added to the endowed scholarship that the OPWRC started thirty-five years ago which now has a total investment of $113,775. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is a first-generation college student.
Former state representative Kay Kellogg Katz spoke on behalf of the OPWRC, "The beauty of this scholarship is it shows what perseverance does. We keep putting money into it, and it keeps growing," she said.
Each year, the OPWRC hosts a salad luncheon fundraiser with all proceeds to going to grow their endowed scholarship. The ULM Foundation was able to get a matching fund grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents to bolster the fund's endowment.
Katz explains, "We do this for a love and understanding of education. We are incredibly proud of this university and what it does for the community."
