Published June 7, 2017

Black Bayou Brass, the resident faculty brass ensemble in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, performed at the 2017 International Women’s Brass Conference, June 7-10 on the campus of Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.

Ensemble members are Dr. James Boldin, Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Jeremy Marks, Assistant Professor of Music, and Dr. Aaron Witek, Assistant Professor of Music.

The ensemble’s recital program, “New Music for Brass Trio by Women Composers,” included works by American composer Gina Gillie (b. 1981) and Argentine composer Adriana Figueroa Mañas (b. 1966). They performed the “Trio for Brass” by Gillie and “Triad” by Mañas, as well as the international premiere of Gillie’s “Scenes from the Bayou,” a work commissioned by and dedicated to Black Bayou Brass.

The composition is a collection of short programmatic scenes that portray various times of day, animals, and scenery at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

The mission of the IWBC is to educate, develop, support, and promote women brass musicians while inspiring continued excellence and opportunities in the broader musical world.

Membership is open to all women and men who would like to support this effort. For more information on the 2017 International Women’s Brass Conference, visit http://www.iwbc2017.com/.
