Haitian native composer, conductor, and clinician, Sydney Guillaume, will hold a lecture
and present a concert at the University of Louisiana Monroe as a part of School of
Visual and Performing Arts’ (VAPA) annual Composer in Residence Series.
Both the lecture and the concert will be held in Biedenharn Recitel Hall. The lecture
will be at 11 a.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m on February 21, 2017.
Guillaume’s lecture will discuss the music of Haiti, as well as its applications to
his own compositions.
The Miami Herald has praised Guillaume’s choral music for its “impressive maturity
and striking melodic distinction.”
The concert will feature the ULM Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performing selections
from Guillaume’s vocal compositions, including some acapella and some accompanied
by Haitian-based drumming.
Guillaume infuses his music with the rhythms and structures of his homeland to create
unique works of music.
His choral works have also been featured at numerous conferences and international
festivals like the American Choral Directors Association, the World Choir Hames and
Ireland’s Cork International Choral Festival.
