Monroe, La. — Dr. James Boldin, Associate Professor of Music, and Dr. Richard Seiler, Professor
of Music, will perform a recital as part of the Visual and Performing Art’s Faculty
Artist Concert Series on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn
Recital Hall.
Their program is titled “Old Wine in New Bottles” and will feature transcriptions
of music for horn and piano. A transcription is an adaptation of an existing musical
work from one medium to another, similar in some ways to translating a written work
into another language.
“Musicians have been borrowing music from one another for hundreds of years,” said
Boldin. “J.S. Bach transcribed Vivaldi’s violin concertos for the organ, and Franz
Liszt transcribed Beethoven’s symphonies and Schubert’s Lieder for the piano. These
adaptations served not only to enrich the repertoire for their respective instruments,
but also to educate and inform them as composers and performers.”
Admission is free and open to the public.
