MONROE, La. — The School of Education at the University of Louisiana Monroe will facilitate two summer camps aimed toward accelerating student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The camps include partnerships with the Girls Scouts’ Power Up camp, which will be held on the ULM campus from June 20-24, and the First West-Broaden Horizons’ STEM Camp, held at First West Church in West Monroe.
Girl Scouts Power Up at ULM
ULM welcomes the Girl Scouts Pines to the Gulf Council for the fourth annual “Girl
Scouts’ Power Up” camp, which highlights STEM initiatives for young girls. CenturyLink
and ULM’s Teach Project serve as co-sponsors of the camp. This year’s theme is: “Energy
and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation.”
“This year we have realized our desire for intercollegiate collaboration and tapped content experts, Dr. Sushma Krishnamurthy and Dr. Anne Case Hanks, the director and associate director of the School of Sciences. These local STEM “Femme Sheroes” have assisted in providing resources and advisement to increase the depth of knowledge for campers,” said Tiffany Jackson, TEACH Project Director, from the School of Education.
The school has also enlisted the help of other faculty and staff from the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences to provide experiential learning activities and demonstrations of STEM in action. For the first time, on Friday, participants will be able to interact with projects on campus that are the end result of ground-breaking research conducted by ULM’s very own in a day long STEM and Science Carnival.
During the camp, girls will build and program robots, solve a Rubik’s Cube, measure their carbon footprint, and take a ride in a hot air balloon. The camp for rising 3rd through 6th grade girls runs from June 20-24. A few slots are still available. On-site registration is available Monday, June 20 at 8:30 a.m. in the foyer of Walker Hall at ULM.
First West-Broaden Horizons STEM Camp
First West Church in West Monroe will host the Broaden Horizons STEM Camp June 15-18,
and June 22-25, with certified ULM Master of Arts and Teaching alumni and students
facilitating lessons.
Campers will enjoy applying principles from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to solve a murder mystery, while creating multimedia campaign ads about the presidential election, and building RoboCars.
