Published April 20, 2015

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s English program will host a bilingual poetry reading featuring the Ecuadorian poet Santiago Vizcaino and his translator Alexis Levitin at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, April 22, in Hemphill Hall, Room 134.

The reading is free and open to the public.

Vizcaino is the author of “Destruction in the Afternoon,” which won the Premio Proyectos Literarios Nacionales of the Ecuadoran Ministry of Culture award in 2008. The book of poetry was also published bilingually this year by Lavender Ink/Dialogos Books in New Orleans.

His critical study of the poetry of Alejandra Pizarnik titled “Speaking Silence,” won second prize in the Ministry of Culture’s essay competition. His first book of short stories, “To Kill Mother” was published in Buenos Aires in 2012.

Levitin’s translations have appeared in well over 200 magazines. His 35 books include Clarice Lispector’s “Soulstorm,” and Eugenio de Andrade’s “Forbidden Words,” both from New Directions.
