The academy, which launched in 2012, will be held from June 21-26. Registration is open to incoming sophomore, junior, and senior high school students interested in computer science, health science, law, and physical science.
The academy fee is $600 per student and includes room, board, instruction, course materials, transportation, and one hour of college credit.
With each career path, students participate in externships with local corporate partners. Those partners include: CenturyLink, a Fortune 500 company and the third largest telecommunications company in the United States; Escamilla and Poneck LLC, an international law firm; Angus Chemical Company; St. Francis Medical Center; University Health Conway; P&S Surgical Hospital; and the Ouachita Council on Aging.
Each externship will focus on specific aspects of the selected career path.
Computer Science:
Those interested in studying computer science will experience cutting-edge technology.
Students who choose this path will participate in mobile app development at CenturyLink
and work alongside ULM computer science faculty.
Health Science:
Students who choose health science will find out what it takes to make it in the medical
profession by shadowing professionals while they treat patients at University Health
Conway, St. Francis Medical Center, P&S Surgical Hospital, and the Ouachita Council
on Aging. They will also study under ULM nursing and biology faculty.
Law:
Students interested in law will try a case in ULM’s E. Orum Young Courtroom with the
ULM Mock Trial team and lawyers from the international law firm of Escamilla & Poneck,
LLP.
Physical Science:
Physical science students will work with chemical engineers and find out how drugs
are synthesized, developed, and tested for purity in state-of-the-art analytical laboratories
at ANGUS Chemical Company. They will also conduct experiments and perform lab analysis
with ULM toxicology and atmospheric science faculty
Interested students must have a minimum ACT score of 24, or possess a 3.5 GPA. Applicants must also secure two academic recommendations.
The completion of online applications and two recommendations are due by May 1.
